Remember Penny????

I fought really hard to save her life...

Many people told me to put her down.

She came to me as an orphaned filly, only 2 weeks old. Tragicly her mother had been a group of horses on a dude string and the man that owned them decided that he didn't want the mare nursing a foal and working. So he dumped Penny at 2 weeks old.

I got her home and started her on mares milk and a week later she got sick, bad diarhea, scours etc. The vet told me she was alergic to the formula and to try a different type.

Well 2 weeks later she was sick again. At this point I discussed getting milk goats with the vet and off to the sale barn I went. Started with one goat, 120$ later we were only getting 1 1/2 qts a day with me milking the goat 3x a day, feeding the goat 4th cutting alfalfa and goat grain for milk goats. The average foal should get 6-8 qts a day so I supplimented with the formula added in with the goats milk. Until I could get more goats. I also hit the web to find out what breeds would produce the most milk as the nubian boar cross obviously wasn't cutting it.

The following week I came home with 2 Saanens and we had more milk as both produced a gallon a day, we we're doing great with the goats milk for about 2 months at which point the diarhea came back. It was really bad and blistered her skin everywhere it touched.

At that point I decided to wean her early. Winter was hitting and I didn't have a barn to keep her warm and with being weaned early I was really scared that she'd end up in trouble. I gave her to a friend of mine who had a barn for her. Best move I could have done for her, she was in caring, loving hands and she has been well cared for. As you can see 2 yrs later.
